How to measure furniture for delivery: a practical worksheet
Measure both the furniture and the route it must travel through. A doorway width alone cannot tell you whether a large sofa or wardrobe will clear a turn, stairwell or landing. Share measurements and photographs with the courier before booking.
Record each separate piece
Use centimetres for dimensions and kilograms for weight. Measure the widest points, including arms, handles, feet and packaging. If the item separates, record each section as it will actually travel. Only allow for removed parts when someone has agreed to remove them safely.
| Measurement | What to record |
|---|---|
| Item or section | Name, quantity and whether assembled or dismantled |
| Length × width × height | Maximum external measurements, including protection |
| Weight | Manufacturer’s figure if known; label estimates clearly |
| Removable parts | Feet, doors, cushions or modules; who removes them |
| Handling concerns | Glass, stone, loose joints, mechanisms or fragile finishes |
Walk the full route at both properties
- Check vehicle access, parking and the distance to the entrance.
- Measure the usable entrance opening, allowing for the door and fixed obstructions.
- Record hall widths and turns, including radiators and fixed furniture.
- Measure stairs, landings and overhead clearance where relevant.
- For a lift, check the door opening, internal dimensions and permitted load.
- Check the final room entrance and where the goods will be placed.

When measurements look tight
Send the courier the actual measurements and clear access photographs. Do not treat a diagonal calculation as proof that furniture can be moved safely: shape, rigidity, grip space and the sequence of turns all matter. Ask for a physical assessment where necessary. Window removal or lifting equipment needs a separately agreed specialist plan.

This worksheet helps describe the move; it is not a guarantee of fit or a substitute for the courier’s handling assessment. Once the details are ready, request quotes and confirm the service before arranging handover.
