How to send large items in the UK: a step-by-step guide

To send a large item, start with its packed dimensions, weight, collection and delivery areas, and the help needed at each end. Then choose a courier service that can handle both the goods and the access. A low quote is only useful when it covers the job you actually need.
This guide takes you from “will it fit?” to collection day. For quotes for a specific load, visit our large-item delivery page.
1. Measure the item as it will travel
Write down length, width and height in centimetres, including packaging, feet, handles and any part that sticks out. Record each piece separately if a table, bed or shelving unit will be dismantled. Count the packages and explain which parts belong together.
Use the manufacturer’s stated weight where available. If you only have an estimate, label it as an estimate and tell the courier before booking. A photograph helps describe an awkward shape, but it does not replace measurements. Our furniture measuring worksheet also covers the route through the property.
2. Match the service to the load
- Large parcel: worth checking for a securely boxed item that meets the chosen carrier’s size, weight and contents limits. Check those limits before paying.
- Van collection: ask about usable load space, securing the item and whether other goods will travel alongside it.
- Two-person delivery: discuss this when a bulky or awkward item needs a crew. Two people do not automatically mean that every staircase or lift is suitable.
- Pallet delivery: ask whether your goods must be secured to a pallet, what loading equipment is needed and where the driver will leave the pallet.
For a sofa or wardrobe, start with furniture delivery. For a fridge or washing machine, use appliance delivery and confirm preparation requirements with the courier.
3. Describe access at both addresses
A van that fits the item may still be unable to collect it. Include the floor, stairs, lift dimensions, narrow doorways, parking restrictions and the distance from parking to the item. Explain whether the recipient needs delivery inside a room or only to an agreed accessible point.
Do not assume the seller, recipient or driver will provide extra lifting help. Agree the crew and equipment before accepting a quote. If access is uncertain, send measurements and photographs privately through the booking process.
4. Ask for quotes using the same information
Give each courier the same item list and service requirements. Being flexible about collection and delivery dates can give couriers more options when planning their route, but it does not guarantee a cheaper price or an available vehicle.
Example request: One dismantled dining table and four chairs. Tabletop 160 × 90 × 8 cm; legs packed separately; chairs 85 × 45 × 50 cm each. Weights to be confirmed. Collection from a ground-floor garage in Leeds; delivery to a ground-floor room in Manchester. Please quote for the crew needed, protective handling, loading and unloading. Collection is possible Tuesday to Thursday; delivery date to be agreed. Please state the complete payable price and anything not included.
Replace the example details with your own. Keep exact addresses, phone numbers and personal information out of a public listing.
5. Compare the complete service and price
Confirm the total payable amount, including applicable VAT and fees. Ask whether the quote covers the stated stairs, waiting, loading, unloading and any extra crew. Explain all known requirements up front and agree any later change before work takes place.
Check who is carrying the goods, what protection applies to your particular item and packaging, and how damage or delay should be reported. Read the relevant terms rather than assuming every service includes the same cover. Use our courier quote comparison checklist to compare offers consistently.
6. Prepare for collection and handover
Agree who supplies packaging and protective materials. Secure loose parts, label separate packages and photograph the item’s condition before wrapping. Keep fittings in a labelled bag attached securely to the appropriate package. Follow the manufacturer’s preparation instructions for appliances and ask the courier what must be completed before arrival.
Confirm the collection window with the sender and the delivery arrangements with the recipient. At handover, check the item count and record any visible issues. Agree what tracking and proof of delivery will be available.
Common questions about sending bulky items
Can I send an item without a box?
Some services may accept blanket-wrapped or otherwise protected goods; others require specific packaging. Describe the item honestly and obtain agreement before booking. “Unboxed” does not mean “ready to transport”.
How much does large-item delivery cost?
There is no useful single price without the route, size, weight, dates, access and handling requirements. Request quotes against a complete description so the prices refer to the same job.
Can a courier collect from a private seller?
Ask the seller to agree access, preparation and a collection window before booking. Our private-seller furniture collection checklist explains the handover details.
Ready to arrange transport? Post your delivery request on Deliverate with measurements, dates and access details. Quote availability depends on the job and participating couriers.
